József Tóth and Erzsébet Tóth Graduate Scholarship in Hydrogeology

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for the József Tóth and Erzsébet Tóth Graduate Scholarship in Hydrogeology. The scholarship (value $30,000 per annum) will be awarded to a suitably qualified student of Hungarian citizenship who intends to enter either the Master’s or Ph.D program in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in either September 2010 or January 2011.


The recipient will be expected to undertake research in the general field of hydrogeology (including, but not limited to, hydrogeological analysis of geologic basins, petroleum hydrogeology, surface water-groundwater interactions, and numerical modelling of groundwater flow). It is expected that holders of the scholarship will have the opportunity to hold a teaching assistantship at some point in their program, for which additional remuneration is payable.

For Master's programs, Applicants are normally required to have completed a four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta. An admission grade point average of at least 4 out of 5 in a relevant undergraduate program is required.

For Doctoral programs, applicants are normally required to have completed a Master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta. An admission grade point average of at least 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on the most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.

English is the primary language of instruction at the U of A and all applicants must be proficient in English. Applicants with degrees/qualifications in a language other than English need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency by completing an approved English Language exam.

Application Procedure

The application procedure for the scholarship consists of two parts.

This application should include a statement of research interest, a curriculum vitae, and a copy of the student’s most recent academic transcript. Applicants should also arrange for three academic letters of recommendation to be sent to Dr Mádl-Szőnyi by the application deadline. The nominating committee will review all applications and provide a ranked list of applicants to the University of Alberta by April 15, 2010.

 

2) Application to the University of Alberta (Application to be admitted to the University): Applicants should also submit a complete graduate school application (including transcripts and three letters of recommendation) to the University of Alberta by February 28, 2010.
