Brief description of the lecture:
The definition of gemstones, their relationship with minerals and rocks. Synthetic, reconstructed stones, artifacts, imitations of precious stones.
The review of the general characteristics of gemstones (hardness, density, optical properties, cleavage, thermal sensitivity, classification possibilities etc.)
The cut of gemstones; grinding types and forms. Gemstones and jewels in the history of humankind (European royal badges, introducing the objects related to the gemstones found in the museums of Leningrad, Istanbul and Cairo, introducing the treasures of the excavations at Troy and Mycenae etc.)
Gemstones and superstitions.
The characteristics, the mining and cultural-historical importance of the most widely known gemstones; the diamond; the corundum-group: ruby and sapphire; the beryl-group: emerald, aquamarine, heliodor, morganite, chrysoberyl (alexandrite); spinel, topaz, garnet-group, zircon, the tourmaline-group, the quartz-group; the organic gemstones: amber, jet, pearl, coral. The presentation of methods used for altering the colours of the gemstones.
A successful paper or a successful colloquium is the prerequisite to gain a signature or a mark at the end of the course.
The mark is set in the following way: 51 % of the maximum points available in the paper is needed to receive the sufficient mark, the higher the perceived % the higher the marks.
In case the mark achieved in the paper is not adequate for the student, it can be elevated via colloquium.
The level of the acquired knowledge is measured by written paper or/and colloquium.
